Puppeteers Program
In December 2009 the puppet program kicked off with the beginning puppet training. Twenty-five children attended the seminar. They learned how to write scripts, make and manipulate puppets, and the art of performing. Through this program the children could express themselves in a creative way while receiving education on current issues affecting their communities. Part of the vision of success of the organization is to enable the children to give back to their community in a tangible way. Puppetry is an exciting vehicle for this vision to become reality.
From there the group of twenty-five was reduced to thirteen of the most talented and dedicated. In April 2010, the group attended their second training in advanced puppetry. Since the second training, they have preformed in a variety of venues, some for profit and others as a volunteer performance. Some of our volunteers to Kenya had the opportunity to see them perform in January 2011. They discovered these children are VERY talented.
The children love the program and look forward to its continued development as they proceed toward increasing their network database. There is nothing like this program in the district at present. The puppet program is used as a platform to educate people on current issues affecting the community such as AIDS/HIV awareness, clean water, health-related issues, and violence against women and children. Every performance is met with praise and acclaim. The community knows these children are part of Watoto Wenye Nguvu and are encouraged to see us so active in their community.
At present we are trying to raise money for a third puppet training session, where the children will learn to make giant puppets. We also hope to purchase a PA system. The PA system is vital to the future success of the program. When they are performing for a audience of 300 it is difficult for the entire crowd to hear the message. Your support will be both an encouragement to the children and provide the resources for them to perfect their skills.
