Girls’ Program

Thank you for helping to supply girls in Kusitawi village and the surrounding villages in the Central district of Kenya with sanitary pads, cotton panties, bras, soap, counseling and health seminars. It is a program I personally helped start in 2006 after living with the girls in the safe house and realizing that so many of the girls in the community were staying out of school because of their period. When a child is an orphan or a family is struggling just to put food on the table and pay school fees the every day needs of becoming a woman are financially unavailable.

Without pads these girls can lose 1/4th of their education by staying out of school. Even worse they become a target for unwanted sexual attention. Their health is jeopardised and they experience high rates of infection from using home made pads of rags or newspapers. Sanitary pads are expensive at $1.00 per package and out of reach for the girls of Watoto Wenge Nguvu. It’s a small donation that makes a big difference in the life of a young woman and can help keep her in school.

Cotton panties and bras are a vital part of helping these kids in their education and grow into young adults. While living with the kids in the safe house I leaned that most kids only have one pair of underpants and after washing them put them back on damp. This is not only uncomfortable, but can cause infections. Bras of all sizes from and sports bras can be donated along with gently worn and new underwear. Yes, send me your underwear and I will make sure it gets to the girls. So clean out your drawers and ask your friends for donations too. Think modest and feel free to send children’s and boys undergarments as well. Part of a young girls development is having a strong community of support so we want to give to not only the girls through this undergarment program, but supply all the children of Watoto Wenge Nguve with at lease two pairs of cotton underwear. Like I said if you don’t feel like sending money, please send me your gently used underpants, your kids gently used underpants, stocking and tights for the girls or buy a new package at the store and mail it along.
